After more than ten years, master drummer and composer Bobby Previte returns to Vienna—with a new band and a new album in tow.
Previte, “the adventurous downtown New York drummer and composer” (The Guardian), is one of the defining figures of New York’s downtown scene and has collaborated with the who’s who of the international jazz and improvisation scene throughout his career. His discography is filled with projects that could hardly be more diverse—all united by Previte’s tireless search for the new, an elusive magic, and his energetic playing.
In his new ensemble, Previte brings together musicians from the Vienna and New York scenes. Beate Wiesinger on bass and Philipp Nykrin on piano and synthesizer join Previte to form the foundation of sound, groove, and free interaction.
The electrified horn section consists of saxophonist Anna Tsombanis, multi-instrumentalist Mike Kammers, and Previte’s longtime musical companion Fabian Rucker.
The result is a dense sonic tapestry of composition, improvisation, and electronic sound architecture.
Austria is no unfamiliar territory for Previte. Over the past decades, he has performed regularly on stages across the country—from festivals like Saalfelden to the Vienna Konzerthaus. Collaborations with Austrian musicians have also been a recurring theme throughout his career, including with Wolfgang Puschnig, Christian Muthspiel and, for over ten years, Fabian Rucker.
With this new ensemble, Previte opens another chapter in this transatlantic collaboration—powerful, adventurous, and brimming with sonic curiosity. At the same time, Bobby Previte will celebrate the release of his latest quintet album, “Second Arrow,” on the Swiss label Unit. (Press release)
