Unclassified Affections is the entrancing new release from drummer and composer Dan Weiss that features the convergence of some of the most captivating musicians on the scene: Peter Evans on trumpet, Patricia Brennan on vibraphone, and Miles Okazaki on guitar. The music features intriguing orchestration, deep rhythmic textures and harmonic invention that makes full use of its unique instrumental combination. The compositions, which were written by Weiss specifically for these musicians, range from deep, meditative moments to intense, high-energy peaks, inhabiting a world of labyrinthine rhythms and delicately layered improvisation where the unusual musical palette contributes to an otherworldly sound universe.

“The musicianly game-lover Weiss keeps making unique contemporary sounds from the creative vicissitudes of mixing planning, intuition, and chance.” – John Fordham, Jazzwise

“Weiss has such a composerly way of organizing sound, so much attunement to harmony and synergy ... Bonkers!“ – The Gig, Nate Chinen

“On Unclassified Affections, the quartet of drummer Dan Weiss, vibraphonist Patricia Brennan, guitarist Miles Okazaki, and trumpeter Peter Evans carve statues in a wall of fog. Rhythmically, the music feels untethered; rarely, if ever, do feet hit the earth. Melodically, there are distinct patterns and clear shapes of hard definition. Even when the imagery grows abstract, it still seems anchored to something solid. The dichotomy of these qualities is an unending source of fascination.“ Dave Summer, The Best Jazz on Bandcamp, 10.7.25

“Should we be blunt? This album is fucking great.“ Dan Lawrence, Spinal Tapdance, 25.8.2025
