David Helbock, one of the outstanding jazz pianists of the younger Austrian generation, has brought some top-class partners on board for his new trio. The multiple award-winning soloist (including at the renowned Montreux Jazz Piano Solo Competition) and recipient of the Austrian government's “Outstanding Artist Award” presents an unusual, highly exciting ensemble.
Instead of the classic double bass, a sousaphone takes on the bass function here – played by Johannes Bär, Helbock's long-time musical companion. The multi-instrumentalist, who comes from an Alpine folk music background, has played with his family band Bär in front of the Pope at the Vatican, conquered the Austrian pop charts with HMBC, and can also be heard on numerous jazz productions.
New to the ensemble is Eva Klesse, currently probably the most sought-after German jazz drummer. She was awarded the SWR Jazz Prize, became the first German woman to be appointed professor of jazz percussion at the Hanover University of Music in 2018, and received the German Jazz Prize as “Artist of the Year” in 2025.
The program consists of the trio's own compositions as well as a very special tribute: David Helbock has rearranged Arnold Schoenberg's “Six Little Piano Pieces” op. 19 especially for this ensemble in a new and jazzy style.
Each of the short original miniatures is first played in its pure piano version before flowing into extended, improvisational jazz versions.
An evening full of surprises and virtuoso joy of playing – presented by three of the most exciting voices in young European jazz.
