The international “Vienna Saxfestival” organized by the mdw—University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna—will celebrate its premiere from April 7 to 10, 2027, bringing together renowned saxophonists, educators, students, and young talents from around the world in Vienna.

The saxophone has a long and significant tradition at the mdw. Thanks to the ongoing artistic and educational work of the mdw saxophone team—initiated as early as 1985 by Prof. Oto Vrhovnik—the instrument has now established itself in orchestras, ensembles, and a wide range of cultural institutions.

The 2Vienna Saxfestival 20272 will highlight, continue, and present in a new format the successful international collaboration of recent years. The festival creates a vibrant space for artistic exchange, musical inspiration, networking, and new encounters.

To conclude the “Vienna Saxfestival 2027,” the mdw Saxophone Orchestra will come together with current and former I-POP faculty members and colleagues from across the federal states. Together, they will perform new compositions for 12 or more saxophones, and perhaps the Saxfestival instructors or even some of the festival’s founding fathers will join in for a spectacular finale. In any case, the SAXOPHONE—in all its colors, facets, variations, and registers—will be celebrated.
