Štěpán Flagar: tenor saxophone

Czech saxophonist, composer, and pianist Štěpán Flagar has been living in Austria since 2014, where he completed his bachelor’s degree in 2019 and his master’s degree in 2024 at the Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz. Throughout his career to date, he has been active in various ensembles across a wide range of musical genres. His credentials include regular concert performances in Europe and beyond, as well as numerous awards and distinctions (Jazz Fruit 2014, European Jazz Competition 2015, Anděl Award 2017, Central European Jazz Competition 2018, Central European Jazz Showcase 2021, Jazzahead 2023, twice NASOM, Öst. MusikFonds, a nomination for the German Jazz Prize 2024, and multiple nominations for the Austrian Jazz Award in 2024 and 2025).

In 2019, Štěpán Flagar was selected by Czech Radio as a member of the Euroradio Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Christoph Cech. His current main projects include the trio HAEZZ, the quintet onQ FIVE and the swing quartet Hot Brew. 2015 – 2025 he was a core member of the group Purple is the Color. In March 2022, his 45-minute Saxophone Concerto No. 1premiered in Linz, which he performed as soloist with the ABPU Symphony Orchestra. As a pianist, he received a nomination for the Anděl Award 2022 with the project Ještě je by Vladimír Javorský.

Currently, he lives in Vienna and collaborates with a wide range of musicians and ensembles. Among other activities, he is a lecturer at the VMI – Vienna Music Institute and Mozarteum University in Salzburg.
