Sadly a perfect storm of health issues have conspired to prevent us from traveling to Europe this week. On Sunday I tested positive for COVID (my first time) and then Julian, who has been struggling with a variety of physical issues for months (dizziness, muscle pain, fatigue) had a kind of breakdown while visiting a doctor Monday morning.

Performing in an intimate club setting is always a special event—and even more so when it is at an historic venue like Porgy and for a kindly gentleman like Christoph Huber, who has been consistently generous, patient and understanding with us at this critical time. We are all very sorry not to be able to celebrate his 30th anniversary this weekend—but we have rescheduled the date to April 30, 2024—and we promise you an unforgettable evening of music. It is always a pleasure to play for Christoph Huber at Porgy & Bess because he is one of the warmest, kindest, and most daring music presenters in Europe – and one of a handful of presenters who REALLY loves the music. When I learned that Porgy was celebrating their 30th anniversary in 2023 participating became an imperative. There are only two clubs in the world that I will always agree to perform in – the Village Vanguard in New York– and Porgy & Bess in Vienna. Anlässlich des 30. Geburtstag des Porgy & Bess macht der Meister dem Club seine Aufwartung – mit seinem New Masada Quartet – das 2018 hierzuorts Premiere hatte – und zweier unterschiedlicher Sets. Übrigens begeht John Zorn in diesem Jahr seinen 70. Geburtstag. Noch ein Grund mehr zum Feiern. Welcome back! CH

Das 2019 gegründete New Masada Quartet ist eine geschlossene Einheit von gleichgesinnten Virtuosen und eine der besten Gruppen, die Zorn je hatte. Der stahlharte Gitarrenmeister Julian Lage, der Bassist Jorge Roeder und der 30-jährige Zorn-Veteran Kenny Wollesen treten mit einer knisternden Live-Energie auf, die die Masada-Musik wie nie zuvor zum Leben erweckt. Angeführt von Zorns vielseitigem Saxophon und seinem Stop-and-Start-Dirigat ist die Musik voller brennender Soli, telepathischer Gruppeninteraktion, herzlicher Lyrik und hypnotischer Grooves.
