Kaum eine andere Formation ist so untrennbar mit der Stilrichtung „Jazz Fusion“ verknüpft wie die Jeff Lorber Fusion. Am 25. September veröffentlicht die legendäre Formation mit „Step It Up“ ihr neustes Werk. Der elf Kompositionen umfassende Longplayer entstand größtenteils in der Zusammenarbeit zwischen Bandleader und Keyboarder Jeff Lorber und dem legendären Yellowjackets-Bassisten Jimmy Haslip. Jeff Lorber über das Album: „Wir haben alte und neue Elemente kombiniert. Also den typischen Jeff Lorber Fusion-Sound mit Bebop und R´n´B-Elementen um moderne Klänge angereichert und so neues Terrain erkundet. Die Idee von Fusion scheint wieder frisch zu sein.“ Bei den Aufnahmen im kalifornischen JHL Sound Studio standen Lorber und Haslip eine Reihe ausgezeichneter Künstler zur Seite. Darunter: Saxofonist Bob Mintzer und Gitarrist Robben Ford (beide The Yellowjackets) sowie die Schlagzeuger Ash Soan (u.a. Robbie Williams, Sheryl Crow), Gary Novak (u.a. In the late ‘70s, trailblazing keyboardist Jeff Lorber had become a prominent figure in the jazz fusion movement—marrying traditional jazz with elements of rock, R&B, funk, and other electric sounds. Now, the acclaimed group he started then—Jeff Lorber Fusion—is back, revisiting the revolutionary sound it helped pioneer, and bringing its combination of complex harmonies, unconventional time signatures, and compelling rhythms along.
