"In the long and distinguished history of jazz, no other group has accomplished so much in audience reaction and critical acclaim in the first year of its existence," (Benoit Quersin)
When Charles Lloyd stepped onstage at the Monterey Festival in 1966, he ranked among the most popular
jazz musicians of his time. When he left the stage 40 minutes later, Atlantic Records were the owners of
a live take that would eventually sell over a million. Lloyd was also the very first jazz musician to be let
onstage at Fillmore West--the rock music citadel--meaning he made it there even before Miles Davis.
At the end of the 60s, after making several other recordings (Psychodelic Jazz, Love-In) and receiving an
inheritance, Lloyd retired to life on a California farm. Much later, in the 80s--after having only lukewarm
success with a rock/pop album--French pianist Michel Petrucciani helped him make a comeback. "Fish
Out Of Water" (ECM 1990) marks yet another stage in his career. If critics claimed earlier that he never
managed to step free of John Coltrane's influence, he certainly did so at least in this album, in which he
reduces his saxophone playing to the bare essentials full of "balladesque" melancholy.
Forest Flower--A Tribute to Charles Lloyd is a dual tribute, first to an artist who made important
contributions to the advancement of musical tolerance and understanding and secondly to a record which,
though it may not have been style-generating, still had a major impact on a whole generation of musicians.
By the way, Charles Lloyd, the legend himself, will honor us with his presence on 2 November. CH
