"Anyone working under the misconception that all free piano must sound something like Cecil Taylor, lend
an ear to German pianist George Gräwe. Forceful and deliberate, he recalls Lennie Tristano's linear fluidity
and Bill Evans' harmonic delicacy, filtered through the 12-toned, tone-colored lens of Anton Webern"
(Down Beat )
Cologne pianist Georg Gräwe is one of those musicians who has tried to improve inadequate working
conditions through his own personal engagement and initiatives. In addition to his activities in the Loft
Club, Gräwe vouchsafed his artistic autonomy by founding his own label--Random Music--which has
attracted notice for its refreshing unconventionality.
Gräwe/Reijseger/Hemingway have been appearing as a trio since 1989, earning the honorific "Three-Man
Orchestra," which Vyacheslav Ganelin coined just for them. CH
