21:00 Dave Douglas Sextet (USA)

"My own feelings about the direction in which jazz should go are that there should be much less stress on technical exhibitionism and much more on emotional content, on what might be termed humanity in music and the freedom to say all that you want." (Booker Little)

Booker Little was one of the most outstanding trombonists in jazz history -- as evidenced by his concert in the Five Spot with Eric Dolphy and recordings with the Max Roach Quintet and Abbey Lincoln -- and Dave Douglas' decision to use new adapations of some compositions by this sax master, who died early and was forgotten early, can't be valued too highly.

When Dave Douglas came in June '94 to play in P&B for the first time, only seven people showed up for the concert. In the meantime, he has experienced a popularity boom through his work with John Zorn in the group Masada, his engagements with Myra Melford's quintet and above all through his own works, such as "Parallel Worlds" and the current "In Our Lifetime." When he returns to P&B for the second time, he'll be playing for a throng! CH
