21:00 Special Reserve feat. Katharina Klement

"My inspirations come mostly out of literature and the fine arts. In music, I'm hunting for the systems composers use to express themselves. Why are Webern's exactly 22 measures long? There must be a reason. Why didn't he settle for 14? This interests me, for example. And why this sequence as opposed to any other? When I understand the system behind the written notations, then I know what I can make out of the material. As soon as the material becomes clear for me, I can turn it around, twist it, and make it mine. Then it's no longer Alban Berg's material, or Eric Dolphy's or Anton Webern's." (Uli Scherer)

"I've always been interested in everything that 'sounds.' It didn't matter what it was. I've never been concerned with the dividing lines between classical music and other sound experiences. For instance, in my latest piece the prepared piano plays a major role. Because for me, it's very, very important that I'm able to make every sound again myself when I'm composing. It has less to do with distortion and rather more with the fascination of building a new instrument for myself and then of building a piece out of the newly created sound. In this building aspect, I find parallels with sculpture." (Katharina Klement)

What unites these two very different composer/pianists is a common calm approach which comes as a relief in this hectic music scene: Both are working -- unpretentiously, modestly, quietly -- at developing sound structures and playing & compositional techniques while largely ignoring the demands of the musical trendsetters ... the publishing, recording and production megapowers ... the promoters of the "Sekundentriumph." Katharina Klement in a "Jazz & Music" Club: a deviation ... provocation ... violation? RD
