Thurs. 9 Nov.
21:00 Peter Brötzmann Quartet feat. Toshinori Kondo (D/J/USA)
Peter Brötzmann: reeds
Toshinori Kondo: trumpet
William Parker: bass
Michael Werthmüller: drums
Originally this band went by the name "Die Like A Dog" in honor of saxophonist Albert Ayler who died 25
years ago under mysterious circumstances. Now they call themselves simply "Quartet," although their
former name better suits their music. In the accustomed brachial-energetic way, the foursome uses Ayler
themes as the basis for collective improvisations which can hardly be outdone in terms of volume and
intensity. When Brötzmann antagonized European jazzers in1967 with his trio performance of "For
Adolphe Sax," hardly anyone would have guessed that his aesthetic mode would survive. But the critics
underestimated Brötzmann: For nearly 30 years now this renegade thinker and player has maintained a
unity in his musical approach and lifestyle and his dogged pursuance of his own idiom has contributed to
the emancipation of European jazz. Welcome! CH
