Tenorist Bennie Wallace said he sometimes wonders if Don Cherry is just a musician or actually a magician, because somehow he always manages to be present whenever a great moment is happening in jazz. "Don's playing has catalytic powers," Wallace added.

Don Cherry took part in the legendary Ornette Coleman Quartet on such important recordings as "Tomorrow Is The Question", "The Shape Of Jazz To Come", "Change of The Century" and "Free Jazz". He also worked with John Coltrane ("The Avantgarde"), Sonny Rollins ("Dearly Beloved"), Albert Ayler, Archie Shepp, Pharoah Sanders and Steve Lacy. In the mid-60s, he cut "Complete Communion" and "Symphony" for Improvisers, two albums which are core Free Jazz productions. Furthermore, Cherry is a classic example of a musician who has chosen to maintain a world outlook, mixing Arabic, Indian, Balinese, and South American influences into his works. Another of his groups deserving mention is Old and New Dreams, which Cherry formed together with Dewey Redman, Charlie Haden und Ed Blackwell.

Don Cherry passed away just recently in Spain. As a memorial tribute to this great jazz man, we would like to offer these few lines from his 1989 recording "Art Deco":

"Every human is
Blessed in her or his life with one love
(passion)
No matter how
Long it may last.
This absolute love will
Last in one`s heart and soul
Forever
Om mani péme´ hung
Aum mani padma hum" (Don Cherry)
