21:00 Roots of Communication (Zurich)

The alphorn is not generally thought of as a typical jazz instrument but rather more as a melodic cliché of Helvetian nationhood. But the case is different when it comes to Zurich trombonist Robert Morgenthaler, who for some years now has been venturing off the well-trodden alphorn path and exploring the hidden possiblities of this instrument, without ignoring its traditional background. For "Imaginary Roots," Morgenthaler has put together a new lineup for his alphorn trio but the music will remain the same, comprising his own compositions plus improvised sequences inspired by jazz, contemporary E-music and traditional alphorn literature, as well as Asiatic, African and European folk; music going clear "Back To The Roots" -- of communication, that is.
