Imaginary Roots European Club Festival
Maybe this is only typically Viennese, but in general anyone here who thinks he or she has to say something about European jazz
tends to fall into a type of unanimous lament. Critics complain mostly about imagined injustices, structural problems, tight budgets,
organizational incompetence, poor musical understanding, falsely distributed resources and artistic ignorance. The arguments are
interchangeable according to whether they come from the organizers, public, musicians, journalists or anyone else interested in
music. Quick solutions are always at hand because the problems are usually attributed to "the other." Of course these never lead to
much change, especially since largely unchanging principles underlie the persistent "melancholy of lament."
The concept behind Imaginary Roots is based on fully reasonable and logical criteria but appears somewhat unconventional in jazz
terms and not at all Viennese as it will involve active cooperation among seven jazz clubs from various European cities which will offer
their infrastructures as support for a variety of European ensembles to create a panorama of this scintillating independent scene.
Imaginary Roots is an attempt to help European jazz win the status and recognition it deserves. With this Club Festival, a first step is
being made in this direction since it represents a collaborative action that has emerged out of the long-standing collective lament.
For the next steps, we'll need the help of the public. Imaginary Roots as Utopia? Christoph Huber, Vienna, October 95
